Generation Common Good Announces Inaugural Parent Organizing Fellows, Amplifying Community-Centered Care and Collective Action
Washington, D.C.— Generation Common Good is thrilled to announce the launch of its inaugural Parent Organizing Fellows, a diverse and committed cohort of parents and caretakers dedicated to fostering community resilience, mutual aid, and systemic change. These fellows embody the principles of intergenerational care and justice, bringing unique experiences from social work, community organizing, disaster relief, and more to their roles. Their work will strengthen Generation Common Good’s mission to create a society that centers equity, care, and collective well-being.
Meet Our Parent Organizing Fellows:
Gabriela Torres (Ella/she) — A community organizer and abolitionist from southern Texas, Gabriela has been active in social justice for over 18 years. A fierce step-parent and leader, she spent six years in Chiapas, Mexico, collaborating with Indigenous organizers to resist exploitation and protect their lands. Based in Austin, Texas, Gabriela brings her lived experience and dedication to police divestment and mutual aid to her fellowship, inspired by her parents’ teachings on resilience and collective hope.
Zyrka (she/her) — Based in Santa Barbara, California, Zyrka has dedicated her life to community-focused work. Her experience includes disaster relief and volunteer mobilization with the Santa Barbara Bucket Brigade, as well as fundraising for African Women Rising. Zyrka, a yoga and meditation instructor of 22 years, is passionate about creating accessible and inclusive spaces for all, alongside raising two children with her husband.
Grace Ouma-Cabezas (she/they) — A New Jersey native and founder of a startup marketing agency, Grace brings nearly 20 years of storytelling experience to her new role as a fellow. With roots in East Harlem, she is committed to building an intergenerational coalition to advocate for a better world. As the daughter of Kenyan immigrants, Grace’s multicultural background fuels her passion for community and connection, all while balancing family life with her Frenchie sidekick.
Myranda/Rand (any pronouns) — A licensed social worker and facilitator, Myranda’s work centers on transforming social work education and practice. With a background in mental health and mutual aid, they are passionate about organizing around food justice, racial equity, and LGBTQIA+ justice. Myranda’s experience in liberatory social work and community engagement enriches the fellowship’s focus on inclusive, community-driven initiatives.
As the Parent Organizing Fellows begin their work, they will lead initiatives that engage families, mobilize resources, and establish support networks for those most impacted by social and economic challenges. Their projects will contribute to a culture of shared responsibility and accountability, aiming to reshape society in alignment with Generation Common Good’s core values.
Jasmine Banks, Founder of Generation Common Good, emphasizes the critical role of parents and caretakers in grassroots change: “In a world that often places the burden of care on individuals, our fellows embody a powerful alternative—one where parents and caregivers come together to transform their communities. Their leadership is a testament to the strength and resilience of intergenerational organizing, showing that, through community and solidarity, we can create the systems of care that we and our children deserve.”
This fellowship will not only amplify the voices of parents and caretakers within the movement for social equity but also inspire communities to imagine and build toward a shared future where every person has access to dignity, care, and belonging.
